SUMMER THOUGHTS

Read Ecclesiastes 3:1-17: "A Time for Everything"

As we find ourselves into our summer break from school, at least for our kids, we should look at what we are doing and what our schedules are like. How do we use this time called “summer”? Many of us have seen the “Family Circus” cartoon picturing Dolly explaining time to her little brother saying, "You see, yesterday is the past, tomorrow is the future, and today is a gift. That's why they call it the present.”

Each day is a gift and should be treasured as such, even when they all might seem to run together. I found an interesting parallel which said we should treat each day (even summer) as the gift it is, and use our time as ideally we would use our money: a percentage for saving, a percentage for charity, a percentage for investing in the future, a percentage for spending, and a percentage for maintenance or operating expense.

I guess saving is comparable to resting; I'll give it 33% or eight hours a day. Giving includes such things as church work, caring for others and family members, helping friends, etc. At 10 %, that would be 2.4 hours a day. Investing might include improving my mind and body as well as using my creative powers for things such as reading, writing and exercising. I will give that 10% also or another 2.4 hours each day. During the summer, I will try to "spend" more time doing recreational things such as going to the movies, watching TV, gardening, talking with friends and family, and so forth. I will give that 25% or 6 hours per day. Some time must be reserved for maintenance or operating expenses, like those daily chores of cooking, cleaning, paying bills, doing laundry, etc. I'll give that 22% or my last 5.2 hours of the day.... Whoops, I forgot work! Well, we will have to realign the spending of our time, but keep in mind balance! Does that make sense? Maybe for some it does and others it does not.

Every day we should remind ourselves to plan and to use our time wisely with some balance to different and good things. This is just a guide and we can give and take and enjoy. For most of us, summer does offer time to use as a gift and we should use it wisely. We can certainly revise our plans and our days as they happen upon us.

We wish you a restful summer filled with 'great family time' as you can create and sustain it. We will be in touch this summer.

Enjoy your days and your family activities!
